DTU Summer School: Together 2 Rethink Conceptual Understanding

National and international research has established that only meaningful and conceptual understanding can be transferred and applied in new, complex settings. Rote learning has little, if any, transfer value. Nevertheless, empirical studies also show that it is still possible for engineering students to pass courses without a conceptual understanding of central concepts and terms.

Thus, the question is: How can we as DTU-teachers aim for, scaffold, and enhance DTU-students' conceptual understanding? This was the topic of the 2025 Summer School.

Why Summer School?

The DTU Summer School for Teaching Excellence is an immersive three-day deep dive designed for educators who strive for excellence in engineering education.

Through engaging discussions, collaborative knowledge-sharing, and co-creation, we explored what defines teaching for conceptual understanding and how to translate it into meaningful student learning experiences.
