Supervision of PhD students at DTU

The workshop aims to give you an overview of the processes that occur throughout the study towards a PhD and to provide you with methods and tools to improve the quality of your supervision.

The target group is PhD supervisors and co-supervisors.
After this workshop / seminar you should be able to:

  • Ensure clarification of and agreement on the expectations to the PhD process 
  • Ensure clear and structured planning and monitoring of the PhD study 
  • Obtain up-to-date information on PhD rules and procedures
  • Guide the PhD student in responsible conduct of research

Based on actual experiences and examples of 'best practice' the following subjects are discussed:

  • Rules, procedures and sources of information
  • Clarification of the expectations to the PhD process with respect to the department, the supervisor and the PhD student 
  • Delimitation of goals, scope and focus areas 
  • Agreement on expectations between supervisor and PhD student on level of ambition, work load etc.
  • Planning and monitoring of PhD projects, time schedules, milestones etc. 
  • How to ensure progress and academic progression in the PhD project
  • Principles of good scientific practice

Course preparation
As part of the preparation for the course all participants will be asked to complete a few exercises (approx. 30 min.). The exercises and guidelines on how to complete them will be provided in advance by e-mail.

Practical information
The course is taught in English at DTU, Lyngby Campus and is free of charge. However, enrolled persons who cancel later than 3 working days before the course start - or don’t show up – will be charged a fee of 500 DKK. Coffee, tea and lunch will be served.
